Floyd and Steve used the navigation app to great success and Floyd said the App was excellent so we would do a self-guided tour again with the route planned. Another couple we met were doing their own bike route but stayed in the same hotels and when I talked with them they didn’t see as many things as we did (i.e. storks and they had to rush their visit in Coimbra to take the train back to Porto). The extra night in Coimbra was a good idea because we toured the old University (founded in 1290!) and the Library was amazing.
We liked the fact they kept us on back roads and through vineyards and seeing the stork nests in the power towers (clacking their beaks) along the river to Coimbra was a highlight for me.
Riding the bike through Porto was a challenge with narrow side walks, cobblestones and streetcar rails to navigate but we did it.

This is an ideal trip for people who have not cycled much - flat terrain through a lovely unspoilt area. This part of Portugal is a well-kept secret where you will find beautiful beaches, lagoons filled with pink flamingos and colourful moliceiro boats cruising along the canals of Aveiro, known as the Venice of Portugal.
Starting in vibrant Porto, famed for its wine cellars and setting on the river Douro, you ride along a waterfront cycle path to the estuary of the Douro. From here you have a choice of routes along beaches and bays to reach your beachfront hotel near Furadouro.
The next day you again have a choice of routes, some of which may involve a local train ride, as you continue along the Aveiro lagoon with its myriad bird species to the heart of Aveiro and your luxury mansion canal-side hotel.
A free day in Aveiro may have you check out the fish market or visit nearby Costa Nova with its colourful wooden houses. You then continue south along the coast, through an area famous for porcelain production and riding past pear orchards, lemon groves and strawberry fields, to your beachfront hotel at Praia de Mira. This town is the setting for another day of local exploration: lagoons, acacia forest and covered bridges await to be explored. Don't forget to bring a picnic as our route will take you to some delightful picnic spots!
